As we head into the fall, I’d like to pause for a moment to celebrate the end of a magnificent summer, a blaze of heat and light. For me, these seasonal transitions are reminders of the inevitability of change, how it is woven into the fabric of life. Still, I often ignore nature and let myself believe that I have total control over my environment. With a flick of a switch, I can summon the power of the world wide web at my desk high above the city of Grand Rapids. But sooner our later, nature re-asserts her power, reminding me that I control very little with my plugs, switches, and machinery.
This summer was so glorious, we kept returning to Meijer’s Gardens and Sculpture Park, which offered us an oasis of art in a magnificent natural setting. The children in these images reminded me of the joys of summer. They remind me too of the glory of nature and the pure joy of existence.
