Thank you, Michiko!

Fellow writer/blogger Michiko McElfresh at Economics Courageous just made my day!   How?  She  nominated my blog for the Liebster Award, given to praise-worthy blogs with under 200 followers.      Thanks, Michiko, for the recognition and pat on the back!  Much appreciated.

Now, let me tell you about Michiko.  I was drawn to her blog because we are kindred spirits–writers with a passion for historical fiction.  Plus, I loved her intriguing and thought-provoking posts about historical events, creative writing, and economics.   (This gives you an idea of Michiko’s wide-ranging interests and careers.)   Even her name hints at her world-view and background.  (Born in Japan, raised abroad, and educated in the U.K.)     She is the author of several published works, including a play and historical fiction.  She is also a specialist in historical maps.

Now, it’s my turn to answer the following 10 questions about myself:

1.  What was your first job?   In high school, I worked as a receptionist/secretary in an outpatient lab.   That put me in the unique position of knowing other people’s secrets–like the coolest cheerleader in school was being tested to see if she was pregnant.   (This was in the days before at-home tests.)

2.  Why did you start blogging?  My blog, Pilot Fish, was created after I returned to grad school several years ago.  At that time, I was navigating a career change from higher education to instructional design in my 50’s.   Like the pilot fish, I was swimming through uncharted waters.  I  recognized that with the current economic climate and the changes in education, I needed to expand my skill-set, but it meant learning new information and tackling technical topics that I had .  This blog is a place to share advice and insights for people who are currently transforming their careers or other aspects of their personal lives.  It has also allowed me to combine two artistic passions–photography and writing.

3.  What kind of family did you grow up in?   I grew up in suburban Long Island, raised on a diet of Spam, Velveta cheese and Wonderbread.   My family is a study of contrasts.  We had feasts at my Italian grandparents’ that lasted for hours.  My nonno (paternal grandfather) was a wonderful cook, who made homemade ravioli, wine, and other exotic Italian treats.  Compare this with my Irish granny, who was a nervous cook and a bit of a neatness fanatic.  Her feature dish was bland mashed potatoes and overcooked roast beef.

4.  What is the best present you’ve ever received?  My Kitchen Aid mixer–of course!  I am a foodie and an alpha chef–in other words, I rule the “range.”

5.   Tell us one guilty secret.  I start the morning with a cup of strong, black tea and a piece of Trader Joe’s dark chocolate with almonds?

6.  What is your favorite place that you’ve ever visited?   Hard question!  One of my favorite places is Volturara Irpina–my grandfather’s village in the mountains south of Naples.

7.  What is your favorite movie?  Just one?  Two of my favorites are Casablanca and To Kill a Mockingbird.

8.  If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?  Florence or Rome or Procida.  (You get the idea–anywhere in Italy.)

9.  Are you a cat or dog person?   Tough question!  Can I say both?

10. Your favorite book?  One book?  Are you kidding?  Here’s two of my top choices:  The Great Gatsby and Ragtime.

Nominees– if you decide to accept, here are the rules:

1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog.

2. You must answer the 10 questions given to you by the nominee before you.

3. You must nominate 10 of your favorite blogs with fewer than 200 followers and notify them of their nomination.

4. You must come up with 10 questions for your nominees to answer or you can answer the questions above.

And in turn, here are my nominations for the Liebster:

Thanks again, Michiko!

  2. Thanks very much for the nomination. I had hoped to get to it this weekend, but alas I have run out of weekend. Those pesky report cards got in the way 😉 I will look into later when I have more time; hopefully next weekend.
