Here’s my last-minute entry to Sally’s phoneography challenge this week. I selected a shot taken from the top floor of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. When I looked over the railing of the staircase, I loved the way the steps spiraled down 4 floors and ended at a goldfish pond at the bottom. (If you look closely you can see the fish.) I liked the contrast between the strong lines of the railing and the graceful curves of steps.

Spiral Staircase at the MCA, Chicago. Shot with my Samsung Galaxy S5.
This shot was captured on my Samsung Galaxy S5. I didn’t use a flash, but bumped up the contrast a bit in Photoshop and intensified the color of the goldfish. I also post processed it with the accented edges filter. My question to you is: is the image confusing or is it clear that you are looking down the steps to the bottom floor? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

This is so geometric and illusionistic at the same time.

Patti, it’s a beautiful photo. It might have been beautiful to capture it as it is so narrow and it seems dark there. Your minimal editing was great.
It is this kind of images that confuses your perception as to what really is, depending on how you lol at it.
After you said it was from the top, then I saw it too.
Fabulous done!

Hi Lucile. Thanks for your thoughts. It’s great to understand how you perceive it. I took a shot from the bottom of the MCA and I thought it was more confusing, so I stuck with the shot from the top of the stairs. I appreciate your interpretation! Many thanks. –Patti

It’s a brilliant capture, especially with the sharp definition of the goldfish. Quite artistic.

It doesn’t matter the orientation the image stands alone as a geometric shape. Great capture.

Beautiful composition. I love the details. And no, it’s not confusing. The baluster/stairs frame the center/goldfish so well and even looks like a boat.
