WPC: Transitioning from Day to Night in the Sonoran Desert

“Light precedes every transition. Whether at the end of a tunnel, through a crack in the door or the flash of an idea, it is always there, heralding a new beginning.”~ Teresa Tsalaky, The Transition Witness

Even as the sun starts to drop below the horizon in Sedona, it lingers for a moment on the sandstone buttes ringing the Verde Valley, glowing red and orange in the setting sun.   When we glimpsed this spectacular “light show,” we pulled over to the side of the road and took a series of shots, just seconds apart.  Even over this short interval, you can see the shifting light and color as the darkness begins to rim the horizon.

As the day begins with light, it ends with it too, closing the quotidien circle.

Light ushers in change for us too.  Often, we are so wrapped up in our own uncertainty and fear as we anticipate another upheaval that we forget to look for the glimmers of light, of hope, which are always there, helping us cross the threshold to the other side.

This week, as we make the transition to December, I hope that you have a holiday season full of light and happiness.

  1. I very much like the transitions! Light can affect subjects so much. Sometimes I feel I get picky about the light I get, whether it’s direct sunlight on the subject, bright light, or the diffused rainy day light. Then I just shoot the image anyway with the light I have, just in case I don’t get it the right way or at the right time. Sedona is an area I would love to explore for the plants growing there!
