Surfaces reveal so much. The marks painters make reveal so much about their work and themselves; their sense of proportion, line, and rhythm is more telling than their signature. Looking at the surfaces of nature may offer equivalent revelations. What do these shapes and patterns reveal about the world and their creator? Surfaces hide so much… John Paul Caponigro
Well, I finally did it. After months of researching and agonizing, I bought the Fuji X-T2 mirrorless camera. I haven’t been disappointed. It is lighter than my Canon 70D and is perfect for traveling. The Fuji lens are also amazingly sharp. I bought the 16 to 55 mm Fuji lens (f 2.8) bundled with the camera and have been experimenting with it. This weekend, I’m also trying out the 90mm Fuji lens (f2) on loan from Lens Rentals.com–a great way to “road test” cameras, lens, and other photographic equipment.
So here’s my collection of shots for this week’s textures theme.
Precious Summer Days
As you can see from the first image from Holland State Park, I’m already fretting that summer is going to be too short!
Cactus In Bloom
Even the prickly cactus cheers up in summer.
Cherries on the Vine
Did I tell you that cherries are one of my favorite types of summer fruit?
Water Walk
This wooden path along the water is one of our favorite walks in Grand Rapids.
Summer Beauty
These stunningly beautiful lilies grow in profusion at Meijer Gardens. I spotted this one yesterday dappled by the sun and shadows.
Have you made the “jump” to mirrorless? Or, are you still debating?
I hope you enjoy these summer textures no matter what season you’re in right now. And have an inspiring week!

I’ve no idea what a ‘mirrorless’ camera is but if this is the result, it’s obviously worth getting! I particularly like the top one.
Hi, Sarah. Thanks so much! The mirrorless smaller and lighter than the standard DSLR. I must confess that the top one is my favorite too. 🙂 I hope you are feeling well.
Patti, a variety of textures that each pull us into their differences.
Thanks, Sally! I always appreciate your comments. So glad that you find the images compelling. Hope you are well and enjoying your garden.
Patti, it’s been one of the most unusual summers with rain almost weekly, including today. Lush yes, but lots of new foreign wild things.
Wow! Wonderful collection Patti. 🙂
Thanks so much, Norma! I appreciate your kind words. Thanks for stopping by.
great shots with your new camera! I am still debating…but I am determined to buy a mirrorless as I have run into severe problems with my neck. My Nikon is very heavy – even if I love it…but I will have to buy a less heavy one. Glad to see how well your choice turned out.
I totally understand. I didn’t want to drag a heavy camera around either. Let me know what you decide. There are some great mirrorless options. Hope all’s well with you, Ann-Christine!
I will – and have a great week!
A great set of photos Patti, I especially like the cactus shot 🙂 As to mirrorless or not, I actually prefer the extra weight of an ordinary DSLR, so that would be my choice.
I understand, Eyeforapic! There’s a camera for everyone, for sure. Glad you like the cactus. It was so pretty I almost wanted to touch it…but thought better of it!
light, texture, composition, everything superb!!
Hi, Cybele. Wow. Thanks so much! Are you enjoying your new camera? It’s a Canon, isn’t it?
Yw!! yes it’s just an upgrade of the Canon Rebel. Though I wanted a full frame I just couldn’t justify the expense- plus all new lenses for same lol!!
Cherries are one of my favorite summer fruits also. I think I’m going to invest in one of those handy gadgets that remove the pits. 🙂
I admit that I didn’t know about a mirrorless camera, but if it lightens the load, I’m all for it. I’d love it if I could find something similar for binoculars!
Interesting, Jackie. I hadn’t thought of the weight of binoculars. I guess you’re a bird watcher. 🙂 There’s a company here that only sells cherry products. Heaven! What’s your favorite? Pie? Tart? Jam?
Pie, for sure. 🙂
Oh yes. I’ve become an birdwatcher in recent years. I have a lot to learn though!
Don’t we all. 🙂 I admire your patience to wait and spot birds in nature.
What beautiful captures of summer. I especially love the Holland State Park photo. The colors are incredible and it has a wonderful dreamlike quality. It’s exactly as I imagined the beach in a favorite childhood book of mine.
Thanks so much! I am delighted the photo brought back a memory of a favorite book. What book is it? I loved the colors too. It was early in the day and the beach was almost empty.
It’s a book by Mary Downing Hahn called The Jellyfish Season, set in Maryland. I don’t think the beach in it is nearly as beautiful as this one, but the mood and atmosphere, which is what I love about both the book and your photo, are the same.
That area of Maryland has gorgeous beaches. I’m an east coast girl (from New York–originally), so I’m a bit partial!
I’ll have to add it to my US travel list! I’ve only been to New York and Massachusetts so far but would love to explore more of the east coast.
The close up of the cactus is crystal clear and sharp. I love it, Patti. 🙂 🙂 Hold on to summer! We’re definitely struggling.
Hi, Jo. No beach this weekend. It was too chilly and cloudy. (sigh) Here’s hoping next weekend is warmer and sunnier! Hope you “find” some sun too in the Algarve or U.K.

Thanks so much, Maddi! I appreciate your kind thoughts.
