Last week, I returned to the courtyard of the Boston Public Library to spend a little time with this remarkable statue. Every time I see it, I take a deep breath and drink in the pure joy of this work created by Frederick MacMonnies a century ago.
Believe it or not, this goddess-child pair stirred up quite a bit of controversy 90 years ago. They were banished from this location and shipped off to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on claims that the dancing goddess, Bacchante, was promoting drink and debauchery, and was corrupting the child in her arms
Fortunately, public opinion has shifted and this joyful work was returned to Boston several years ago and was recently restored to its original beauty.
It is my submission this week to Leanne Cole’s Monochrome Madness. I hope you have a chance to visit it and share the joy.

Thanks for the early morning smile, just what we all should be doing: romping into the day.

I’m not smiling at anything that includes water these days with Hurricane Irma threatening our shores! Just kidding – love the statue.
