Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Wonder

On a recent trip to Southern California, we spent several days in the small town of Joshua Tree. Each year thousands of visitors come here to hike and climb the rocky escarpments in the national park, which traverses two deserts–the Colorado and the Mohave.  I marveled over the stark beauty of this place and the dramatic silhouettes of the Joshua trees, their crooked limbs reaching towards the sky.  The natural beauty of this place filled me with wonder and inspired me to take hundreds of photos.

The theme for this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge is Wonder.  We invite you to create a post that captures a moment, a feeling, a place, a person—which filled you with wonder.

Here are the guidelines:

  • Lens-Artist Photo Challenges are published every Saturday at 12 noon EST by one of our moderators. Post your reply any time before the next challenge is announced.
  • Tag your post with lens-artists so others can find it easily in the WordPress Reader.

    • Hi, Ann-Christine. They are marvelous trees and only appear in a few places in the Southwest. I understand that they were called “Joshua” trees by the Mormons who thought the tree resembled the Biblical Joshua extending his arms to heaven. Interesting!

      • Actually I live in a valley , Dehradun. The place where this photo was taken is mussoorie, a nearby picteresque hill station where my extended family lives, so that guarrantees numerous visits!
        It’s almost a second home for me ( :

    • Hi, I.J. Nice to meet you! Thanks too for your kind words. There are a few rare days of rain in JT. We were there for one of them. I’m still amazed at how little water the vegetation needs to thrive.

  42. I will push away my shyness and drop you a line! My father’s name was Joshua thus apart from a great capture this reminds me of his 6 foot 3 inches. I have made my first contribution to Lens-Artists and trust it will be the first of many.

  43. Joshua Tree (the park and the tree) is a marvelous study for a photo challenge about wonder. The tree seems otherworldly or a cross between a cactus and a palm tree. Have you tried B&W images? I bet that would add an interesting mood to the shot.
