Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #25 Reflections

I’m fascinated with reflections.  They add another dimension to a photo–almost as if we’re capturing another world in the reflective surface.  Over the past year or so, I’ve been experimenting with different surfaces when capturing photos of people, places, and objects.  Here are a few shots from my collection:

Glass

Glass is performance art…from its fluidity to the way it scatters light in space. — Thomas Phifer, Architect

I captured this shot of the United Nations on a stormy day in New York City in November.  The sky, clouds, and buildings reflected in the building seem like another miniature world.

Water

Beauty …is of the great facts in the world like sunlight, or springtime, or the reflection in dark water of that silver shell we call the moon. ~Oscar Wilde

In this shot of Florence,  I loved the reflection of the sky and buildings in the Arno River on a morning after a heavy rainstorm.  In the distance, you can see multiple bridges.  The one in the distance is the famous Ponte Vecchio.

Metal

We do not create the work. I believe we, in fact, are discoverers. – Glenn Murcutt

The reflection of the Chicago skyline in the giant Bean sculpture adds an interesting dimension to this photo.

Mirrors

The world is a looking glass and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face.~William Makepeace Thackeray

I think we can all agree that the selfie is a hallmark feature of our age.  In our travels this past year, we have seen hundreds of people carefully posing themselves in front of famous landmarks, documenting key moments in their travels and/or establishing themselves as a style influencer.

When I spotted this Greek statue in a store window studying her own reflection, I laughed out loud.  I guess you can say that the selfie is a modern version of staring at our own reflection in a mirror.

We hope you can join us this week for Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #25, which focuses on reflections–in water, in glass, and other reflective surfaces.  Feel free to include selfies or pictures of other people taking selfies. A special thanks to all of you who participate.  The next challenge (#26) will be hosted by our friend Ann-Christine on Saturday, December 29th.  I hope you enjoy the holidays and create wonderful memories with family and friends.

Before you go…

  2. Great shots, Patti! The Bean is wonderfully observed, Florence is irresistible, and she does have rather a lovely profile 🙂 🙂 Have a great Christmas, wherever your steps might lead, and a healthy happy 2019.

    • Hi, Jo. Thanks for your kind words. And you’re right. She does have a “classic” profile! All the best to you too for the holidays and into 2019. How many steps will we both “clock” in 2019?? I’m still keeping my goal of 10,000 per day…although some days hit the mark and others don’t!!
