Something old,
something new,
something borrowed,
something blue,
and a sixpence in her shoe–Old English Rhyme
I’m sure most of you know the wedding custom of wearing something old, new, borrowed, and blue on your wedding day to bring good luck. According to an old English rhyme, these items can bring anyone good luck any time.
For this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge, we’re inviting you to go on a photo scavenger hunt and find places or things that are old, new, borrowed, and/or blue.
Here are some guidelines:
- Plan to visit a place near or far, such as a park, a neighborhood, a city, or even your own home. If you wish, you have the option of “visiting” your photo archives.
- During your visit, look for places or things that are: 1. old, 2. new, 3. borrowed, and/or 4. blue. For an extra challenge, take (or find) a photo that combines some or all of these qualities.
- Take (or select) as many photos as you wish.
- If you visit a place, give yourself a set amount of time for the hunt, such as an afternoon, a day, or a weekend.
- How many places or things do you need to capture (or select)? That’s up to you.
To get you started, I’ll share my recent scavenger hunt in rural New York State.
Something Old
This summer, we’re spending some time with family in northern New York/New Jersey. For the scavenger hunt, I decided to visit the rural town of Pine Island, famous for its fertile black soil and its onions. These twin silos and decaying barn called to me. I processed this shot with the Silver Effects filter from the Nik Collection and a sepia tint to highlight the rough texture of the silos and their age.
Something New and Blue
This shot of young corn falls into the “something new” category. The beautiful evening sky and the building fit “something blue.” I also love the pinwheel and other colorful decoys, which keep away the birds. For this shot I bumped up the saturation and cropped the shot a little on the left.
Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue
Further down the road, we spotted the Blue Arrow Farm and a campground with several teepees. This shot incorporates all 4 qualities: teepees are an “old” dwelling created by Native Americans; at the same time, these teepees are “new” because they have plastic covers instead of the traditional animal hides; the teepees are also “borrowed” because the owners of the camp use the Indian-style dwellings in a modern-day camp. And finally, the shot is “blue” because of the sky and the teepees’ decorations.
Processing this shot was relatively simple. The sky was magnificent that evening, so I just needed to bump up the contrast and crop the shot a bit in the foreground.
We love our photo “conversations” with you each week as you create posts on the weekly themes. We invite you to join us again this week for the Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #58: Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue.
Last week, many of you jumped into Tina’s challenge and shared different ways of “Taking a Break.” The variety and originality of your responses were marvelous.
HAVE YOU SEEN THESE?
- Chris Breebaart of What’s (in) the Picture shares his grandson’s favorite way of taking a break
- Mei-Mei explores a great way to take a break in Spain
- Jez Braithwaite posts images of an idyllic stay in Serra Canyon in California.
If you’re new to the challenges, click here to learn how to join us. Remember to link your post here and tag it Lens-Artists to help us find your post in the WP Reader.
Next week, it’s Ann-Christine’s turn to lead the challenge, so be sure to visit her blog. As always, Amy, Tina, Ann-Christine, and I thank you for your support of our challenge!

We don’t have sixpence in the States, but as another song goes, “if you haven’t got a ha’penny the God bless you”. Great photos and great challenge.
Wonderful, John! Glad you like this one. 😄😄
…THEN God bless you, not THE. Thumbing on an iPhone.
No worries. The iPhone gremlins are notorious.
Love the silos shot in black and white, Patti. We don’t often see that at yours and it works beautifully 🙂 🙂 Grey and pretty damp in Yorkshire, but that’s only today.
Thank you so much, Jo! I should try b and w more often. :). :). So you’re still in the UK, I see. So sorry it’s gray and damp. I bet you’re missing the warmth and sunshine back home.
Warmth of family has been wonderful here, though, Patti, so it’s a small price to pay. 🙂 🙂
Agree, the silos are spectacular!
Beautiful photographs Patti and such a fun challenge! I ‘borrowed’ some flowers in the foreground for one image and the rest was already there: https://tranature.com/2019/08/10/haiku-loch-broom/
Thank you so much, Xenia. Your shots are lovely! A great spot. Your images are so crisp and clear. Beautiful.
Thank you so much for your kind words dear Patti 🙂💖 xxx
Beautiful pictures:))
Love your photo for something old.
Thank you so much, Colline! I’m so glad to hear from you. :). I hope you’re enjoying your summer break.
I thought this is more a challenge than usual and then I realized I had it covered. Here is my contribution using my new photography blog: https://chava61photography.photo.blog/2019/08/10/lens-artists-photo-challenge-58-something-old-new-borrowed-blue/
An interesting challenge, Patti, and you met it perfectly.

You certainly have risen to the challenge, Janet. A great post!
🤭. Thanks very much, Patti.
This one’s going to take some thinking about.
Hi, David. I’m sure you’ll come up with something great. You always do. :).
A tough task, but here is my photo for this theme https://wp.me/paGem-6iY
Hi, Chris. I think you found a great solution to the challenge. And he’s adorable, too!
Thank you!!
And thank you for the ping back to my photo of the last theme! A little feedback: my name is written as Breebaart.
You’re very welcome, Chris! I fixed your name so now it’s correct. I forgot about the double vowels in Dutch names!
I can imagine the confusion 😂 thank you!
Such a fun challenge, Patti! To plan, hunt… do help get a good shot, especially for this challenge.
These photos are beautifully captured. The “New and Blue” is my favorite. 🙂
:). :). Thank you so much, Amy. I’m delighted you like this one. It’s fun to try something different, I think.
this is such a fun idea – I am getting to work on my hunt now –
be back later with the link – and sadly I missed the last two weeks for the LAPC (sniff) so I am looking forward to joining in with what you call the “photo conversation” (nice term)
We’re glad you’re back! I’m looking forward to your post. And thanks too for your kind words.
What a creative challenge. Will have to get my thinking head on! Love the tipees!
Hi, MM. I can’t wait to see your post. :). I’m so glad you like the teepees. You don’t seem them very often in New Jersey!!
I loved this week’s challenge which certainly is not easy and yet the possibilities are immense. Fantastic post Patti!
Hi, Sheetal. We like mixing things up sometimes and trying something different. I’m glad you like this one! Looking forward to your post! Thanks too for your kind words.
Lovely photos and a REAL challenge!
Hi, Dawn. We’re trying something new….:). :). Hope you enjoy it!
I love those silos; we never see them here. Old grain and new, nice juxtaposiition.
Nice theme. Old and new live so closely together in the world, I wonder which one to pick. I just might land up giving you more links than one.
Hi, IJ. Many thanks! The silos are common in rural America. Glad you like them. Your post about the square is fascinating…how the world powers shift along with the monuments!
Thanks. Happy to join in, and thanks for taking the time to run this challenge.
You’re very welcome, IJ. It’s been a lot of fun.
Fantastic pics, love the old silos 😁
Hi, Jez. Glad you like them! They seem to be the favorite this week. :). :).
ok
Love this idea! You have some great images to illustrate the prompt, and I love those monochrome silos!
Thank you so much, Sue. I’m delighted you like the idea of a different type of challenge. I can’t wait to see what you come up with. :).
Hmm, I need to think about this one!
Here is mine. https://shareandconnect.wordpress.com/2019/08/11/70487/
Have to think a little harder for this one. A great theme, Patti! 🙂
yes that is true Amy. same with me! Good one Patti!
I loved your exquisite post, Amy. Beautiful images that are perfect for the challenge. :).

Hi, Gracy. I’m glad you joined us. A few people mentioned that was challenging, but so far the posts are great! I loved the horse shoe in yours for good luck.

Love the silo shot, Patti and I can never see enough pictures with dramatic sky. Thanks for the challenge.
Hi, Wendy. Thanks for your kind words about the silo shot. And you’re very welcome about the challenge! Thanks for your thoughts!
Reblogged this on All About Writing and more.
In Spain we have the same custom at the weddings: “Something New, Something Old, Something Borrowed and Something Blue” which consists that the bride wears with her during the wedding these four objects representing connections with her past, his future, his love and his happiness.
Love your photos!
Lovely custom, Ana. I didn’t know how widespread it is. It’s a lovely tradition.
I love the bright colors of your photos and the old silos are great too. When I first saw the prompt, I didn’t have a clue what to do, but after seeing all the creative responses, I took a chance. Thank you for the opportunity to play along. My pingback didn’t work, so here’s the link. https://www.quaintrevival.com/5-simple-facts-about-me/
Thanks for sending the link, Shelley. I’ll take a look next. Some people are having trouble with the pingbacks. And thanks too for your kind words. It is a different type of challenge, and I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
My contribution is on the way Patti 🙂
Great. Looking forward to it.
Should be there by now I hope 🙂
Another great post, John. 🙂

Thank you for another fun exercise, Patti! I really enjoyed it, even though I am currently not fully mobile so I delved into my archives.

Wonderful, Manja. Sorry your mobility is restricted. I hope you’re OK. I’ll take a look at your shot next.
Driving around northern Shetland I just had to stop and snap when I saw this wedding announcement. And what great timing, given the Lens Artist challenge this week: https://travelwithintent.com/2019/08/12/is-there-a-sixpence-in-her-shoe/
How perfect is that, Deb! Great post.
Here’s my old, blue, borrowed and New contribution:

Great, VJ. I’m still thinking about that swing/chair in the tree! Wonderful idea.
I’m a bit late to this post, Patti! I loved the blue of the sky in the last two photos. They almost look like paintings.
Hope you’re enjoying your summer!
Hi, Jackie. It’s always great to hear from you–no matter when. I hope you’re enjoying your summer, too. Are you working on another writing project?
