Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #71: Creepy

This week, Ann-Christine invites us to share our version of “creepy” in keeping with our recent Halloween holiday and the beginning of the winter season in parts of the world.

You can imagine my surprise when I saw this skeleton sitting down to dinner in the National Gallery of Victoria Museum in Melbourne.  I added a selective blue light filter to highlight the eeriness of this scene.

This image, reposted from earlier this year, will always come to mind when I think of creepy things.  This magician’s custom ring from the Harry Houdini Museum in New York City was made with a glass eye.

In ancient Rome, statues of dogs used to guard homes.  They were inscribed with the warning “Cave canem”–which is Latin for “Beware of the Dog.”  I suspect that these modern-day doorknockers from Florence continue the tradition of scaring away the evil spirits.

This statue from the Royal Academy of the Arts in London greeted me this week as I was making my way to the Lucien Freud exhibit.  This half-skeleton, half-zombie statue was fascinating and scary.

  4. Excellent choices, Patti! Nothing really beats that ring – I cannot imagine wearing it – who would? Very disturbing. Love the skeleton/zombie statue – nice work even if it is scary. Interesting too what the blue light does to the first image!

  6. I was in London last week and went to see th Lucien Freud. To be honest I was surprised to see he was a fairly handsome young man but for me he was “creepy” later in life. I don’t thing he was actually creepy as I have a cousin who knew him and she liked him. But his sefl portraits of himself as an older man have a creepy quality to them.

      • I read a book years ago about horror films which asked why they are so popular. I don’t remember details, but I do remember the concept of “pleasurable fear” — a sort of catharsis in facing the frightening in a safe context. I guess creepy images perform the same function and can be very memorable.

  19. That ring takes the cake for being creepy – and it must be a creepy cake as well.
    I do trust the aeroplane will get of the road again to justify the jet lag or does your automobile have a jet engine?
