This week for Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #125, Tina says, “You Pick It!” OK, Tina, here we go. Here’s my pick: one beautiful afternoon, one lens, five photos.
There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul.~Victor Hugo
3:09 p.m.
The day wasn’t promising. It rained heavily until early afternoon when the clouds started to break apart. That was when we decided to take a walk. As we approached the beach, we passed low-lying marshes with a few houses. The air was chilly and damp.
3:16 p.m.
We parked at Wallis Sands Beach down the road and started walking along the shore. Even though it was 48 degrees F (8 degrees C), a runner sprinted past us wearing only shorts. (Full disclosure: I was wearing a down coat, a hat, and gloves.)
3:26 p.m.
Over the next half hour, the sky continued to change. A few surfers in wet suits were catching the last of the rough surf. Here’s one of them leaving the beach.
4:13 p.m.
A lone surfer arrived late when the sky to the west was already filled with rosy light. He was racing to catch a few waves before sunset.
4:15 p.m.
The sky shifted again to deeper shades of purple, pink, and orange. I stopped to take this last shot of two people with their dogs right before we left the beach. I loved how their orange hats were reflected in the evening sky.
As the hours of daylight continue to grow shorter, I plan to chase these magnificent bursts of twilight colors even as the winter sets in. These moments are a joyful reminder that after the dark and gloomy days of winter, the light and heat of summer will return.
We hope you join us this week for Tina’s “You Pick It!” challenge. I am looking forward to seeing your varied and creatively-inspired posts. Remember to link your response to Tina’s post and use the Lens-Artists tag to help us find you in the Reader.
SPECIAL NOTE: As promised, on the last challenge of the month, we’re announcing the theme of our next challenge in advance. On Saturday, December 5, I’ll be hosting LAPC #126: An Alphabet Challenge–Subjects That Begin with the Letter A. So, please stop by this site next Saturday at noon and join the fun.
In the meantime, have a safe and creative week in your corner of the world!

Amazing colors in that sunset Patti, what a glorious ending to the day. Yes, the warmth and summer sunshine will return as always, but in the meanwhile there is beauty to be found all around us. I laughed out loud at your wintry attire vs the runner. Personally I think he’s the crazy one! And yes, the orange hats are perfect 😊

I was astounded by the sunset that day. And now I’m the hunt for others! We’re going back there this afternoon…with down coats, hats, mittens….I am envious of that runner—because he’s moving fast enough to be hot!! Thanks for a fun challenge, Tina. Your post was outstanding.

I love a day when sunshine and shoowers chase each other across the sky, Patti. Awesome sunsets! It must be incredible to be able to surf with that backdrop! It must be incredible to be able to surf- full stop! Do you think they have time to see the sky? 🙂 🙂 Have a great week!

Hi, Jo. Me, too! It’s surprising how often there’s a spectacular sunset after a day of rain. Now I’m on the hunt for more! You’re right. The surfers have a wonderful view of the sky if they have the time to fully appreciate it. I am always amazed at people who dive into the water in this weather! Take care, Jo. I hope you’re enjoying the sunshine in your part of the world.

How fabulous are these! Now I must get to the beach for a sunset, I have seen some beauties from my house recently, but by the time I think that it is going to be a good one I have left it too late to head to the coast. And the times I have done (20 minutes) the sunset has simply fizzled out.

I guess, you’re right, Patti. This morning was the coldest of the upcoming winter: -4°C (~24°F) and it will drop more during the next weeks

Hi, Amy. The daylight hours are getting so short! The earliest the sun sets here is 4:11–in a few weeks. So, from that point on, we’ll be gaining more daylight. When are your sunsets? As early as mine? I’m delighted you like this series, too. I was very, very happy that Mother Nature put on a grand show.

Fabulous, Patti! Such a great idea, and what a rewarding late hour! You captured people in perfect action as well! I never manage to do that. And what a treat to see a sunset by the sea – I never go to the sea in wintertime. We live too far away from it. The last image is amazing – and the orange heads! But the sky is fantastic in all your images – perfect.

Hi, AC. I was so happy with how the afternoon turned out. We’re trying again today. We’ll see how it goes. Mother Nature provided us with a magnificent display!! We missed the ocean when we lived in the Midwest. I’m so happy we can visit often. I hope you enjoy your time in the country this week. Take care.

Wow, what beautiful colors, Patti. Those hats are amazing. I had a down coat experience similar to yours in Seattle in January walking around Greenlake. My beachcomber wore a red speedo and had to be about thirty years older than yours. He had stopped to talk to a young woman and his skin matched his speedo. It takes all kinds. Is the ocean super cold now?

Hi, Marsha. Yes, it would be very cold…I think. I’m not going in though!! Yes, it takes all kinds. I also saw a man running into the water that day, getting completely wet and running out. I don’t see the allure!! Too cold. Thanks for your kind words. Mother Nature is the true artist!

Such nice photos, Patti. I enjoyed the walk along the beach but thumbs down to jogging almost naked or surfing. 🙂 I really appreciated your comment on my post but in the process of responding I completely lost it and don’t know if or how I can retrieve it. Thanks for your kind words and I will add the idea of liberating to the mix of thought going through my head right now.
