Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #126: An Alphabet Challenge–Subjects That Begin with the Letter A.

If plan A doesn’t work, the alphabet has 25 more letters – 204 if you’re in Japan.~Claire Cook

For this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #126, we’re going back to basics–namely, the ABC’s. We’re starting at the very beginning with the letter A.  What images can you find that feature a subject that begins with the letter A?  Here are some ideas to get you started: 

A is for Anacapri, Architecture, and Arches

Image 1: View of Anacapri, Italy

Image 2: Architecture, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, Massachusetts

Image 3: Arches in the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, NY

Signs, Letters, Graffiti

You can also include images of signs and graffiti that include the letter A. This next image captured in the North End of Boston features a wonderfully quirky place, All Saints Way, as well as several signs with the letter A.

Concepts with the Letter A

You can also take a conceptual approach. Here’s an image shot this week on an evening walk. I wanted to convey the concept of “alone.” I call it “Alone at Sunset.”

In this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #126:  An Alphabet Challenge–Subjects That Begin with the Letter A, we invite you share images that feature a subject that starts with the letter A. You can also include signs and graffiti with the letter A. For an added challenge, capture an image that illustrates a concept with the letter A, such as alone, abstract, or afraid.  In your post, include a link to my original post and use the Lens-Artists tag so that everyone can find your post in the WP Reader. We hope you join the fun!

Looking back at last week, we were inspired by Tina’s gorgeous images created to highlight the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi.   In her “You Pick It” challenge, we were treated to a variety of subjects close to your hearts.

    • I was thinking the same thing as I typed this post. It IS the longest title we’ve ever had! Thanks for the kind words about the arches and the sunset shots. It’s so funny. I can’t tell you how many times I take dozens of photos with my Fuji and then take one final shot with my cellphone. And that last phone camera shot is the best one of the bunch!

      • I use my iPhone quite a lot, Patti, because it’s so easy to carry. When I go to the Preserve, the Nikon always goes along, as no good bird shots without it. 🙂 But most of my macros are taken with the phone. Just got a 7, but haven’t changed over to it yet, so it will be interesting to see if the camera is any better or offers any different options from the 6s.

  15. Anacapri shot is breathtaking, Patti. It reminds me of Sorrento. I love how you capture Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the the Brooklyn Museum. I’m in awe with the ”Alone at Sunset” image.
    There are many opportunities for the letter A.

    • Thank you so much, Amy! I’ve been going deep into my archives for some shots that got “buried.” I’m glad I found that one of Anacapri. The architecture shot and the sunset shot are new ones. I’m so glad you like this challenge! Looking forward to your post.

  18. Such unique examples for the Letter A challenge! My favorite is the Massachusetts Art and Design building, but all are beautiful and so appropriate for the challenge. And your last one reminds me of favorite alone times on the beach. Nicely done.

    I may not participate this week because I’m at the beach, but thanks for the kickoff for this week. I look forward to the interpretations by others.

  25. That is wonderful shot of a high rise; the architecture slowly came alive for me as I noticed the shadows. Anacapri! I didn’t have a camera when I went there, so it was wonderful to be reminded of the place. And Brooklyn museum is a place I’ve driven by, must stop the next time around.

    Didn’t think that the world is so full of As. Now you have set me thinking.

    • Wonderful, IJ. Isn’t that high rise great? I can’t tell you how many years I stared at it without taking a photo of it. Now at last I have it! We decided to climb down from the summit in Anacapri…45 minutes to go all the way down!! I hope you get to the Brooklyn Museum, too. It’s well worth a visit. I’m looking forward to your post.

  29. A very funny challenge, it has made me think and, in addition, I love the letter A.

    I found it a bit complicated, thinking in Spanish is more difficult to find the words in English, but I think I have succeeded.

  36. Alone on a sunset beach is fabulous. I like alphabet challenges, I recall doing one with Fritztext several years ago (I may have got his name wrong). I wonder if I have some angels somewhere? 🙄

  44. A fine beginning Patti – loved your images as well as your ideas. The theme is wide open to interpretation so I’m looking forward to the responses. Your opening images are an amazing display of perspective. The tiny town below the cliffs shows us how immense the cliffs are, while the top-down scan of your architecture example helps one to realize how tall the structure really is. Well done!

    • Thanks, Tina! I was so happy to find that shot of Anacapri deep in my archives from the 1990’s. The climb down was amazing. We opted to take the stairs instead of the bus! And the look up at the architecture at Mass Art was fun. Glad you enjoyed them. Have a great week, too.

  54. And regarding your post – I did like the architecture for the Massachusetts College of Art and Design – but I am not sure I love it = I mean they did a fine job but it has almost a 50s got married to the 70s color design feel and reminds of playing blocks
    Still = it is very cool and better than an average plain ol building – but feel it was lacking to wow factor for what buildings can be shaped with using new materials.
    They can make buildings turn, left or have angles and well – this was artsy – but lackluster (in my very humble opinion) and I ams till glad you shared it because it fit so well with your theme – and I love art so you continue to expand our culture shaping when you give us snippet like this

    • Hi, Yvette. Your thoughts on the Mass Art building led me to Google. Apparently, the building was inspired by Gustav Klimpt’s Tree of Life, and it is a student dormitory. They call it the Tree House (no surprise!). https://www.world-architects.com/en/architecture-news/reviews/massart-tree-house-student-residence. It appears to be quite new. That’s what I love about art–it’s open to so many interpretations. I’m glad you enjoy it, too!

      • Well thanks for looki g it up and now that you mention it – I can see that artists connection
        In a way (and I really do not love his enlinhayed art and head positions and patterns and colors – haha – I feel so negative but it really is just an opinion )- and reminds me that “different strokes for different folks” and some team of people loved the art and idea enough to make this form happen – and I bet it adds interest and it sure if better than the usual brick or siding – so good for them
