Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #136: Subjects Starting with the Letter–S

The shelves of this store are stacked with stock. You will find a steamship, a sailing ship, and even a spaceship. There are several sorts of shoe and scores of signs and symbols. There is a sketch of a squinch, a selection of shells (not all from the sea), a siamang settled on a seat, a sponge to be studied, and sundry stuff suspended from strings. In all I included 1,234 Ss for you to see.― Mike Wilks

For this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #136, we’re circling back to the alphabet.  This time, we’re going to focus on the letter S.  What images can you find that feature a subject that begins with the letter S?  Here are some ideas to get you started: 

S is for strawberries. (By the way, they were delicious.)

S is for stallion, sky, and statue.

The letter S also includes shadows in the snow and a serene winter scene from my new home town.

And let’s not forget, S is for saguaro and spikes and sharp.

And finally, S is for Sintra, Portugal, the home of this splendid Moorish palace, painted in stunning shades of yellow and orange.

In this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #136:  Subjects That Start with the Letter S, we invite you share images that feature a subject starting with the letter S. You can also include signs and graffiti with the letter S. For an added challenge, capture an image that illustrates a concept with the letter S, such as serene, sharp, spooky, or silent.  In your post, include a link to my original post and use the Lens-Artists tag so that everyone can find your post in the WP Reader. We hope you join the fun!

Looking back at last week, we were inspired by Sheetal’s marvelous challenge, A Glimpse of My World. Her post opened my eyes to the wonders of the Beatles ashram and the Ganga Aarti ceremony in Rishikesh, India. Your posts took us around the world–to the USA, Portugal, the U.K., the Netherlands, Canada, Australia–to name a few. By sharing the places, people, and things that make you happy, our spirits were uplifted, too.

    • I’m delighted, Frank. Sintra is gorgeous. It was so hard to find the right angle to capture it, but it turns out one of my first shots was pretty good. I can imagine all the “s-es” in your beach shots–sand, seashell, sea, etc.!! I hope all’s well and that you can join us!

  25. Hi Patti, You are so clever with your esses. I have a bit of a lisp, so this would be super sloppy for me to read out loud seven times fast. It looks like some of your photos came from AZ. I just saw the Saguaro National Forest driving down to Scottsdale a couple of weeks ago. Your picture is stunning. I like the stallion, too.     These challenges of letters, make me squeeze the neurons to find those words in English, which sometimes are not the same in my language… I’ll get on it. 🤔

  112. From the first time I set foot in the Sonoran desert in the mid-90s, I’ve never tired of seeing saguaro: the size, their shape, their verticality. I like to think they have a secret when they point to the sky. The last time I was in the Tucson area was October 2018, which seems both like yesterday and an age ago.
