Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #189: Odds and Ends

As I search through my archives looking for images that fit our themes, I often come across a few outliers or to put it bluntly–misfits–that stubbornly “demand” to be included. This week, Tina has given us a chance to highlight our “misfits,” in her “Odds and Ends” challenge.

This image always makes me smile. On a walk in Manhattan, we saw a delivery person dropping off boxes and mannequins in front of a store. When I noticed that the mannequins were artfully arranged, I asked him why he took the time to do this. He answered: “Because I get bored.”

Here’s another “odd” shot that never seem to fit any of our challenges. At a street fair in London, we saw this couple having fun in a bin filled with styrofoam balls. This little bit of fun was sponsored by Polo, Ralph Lauren.

I never found an opportunity to post this image captured on a walk in the Docklands area of Dublin. Are the windows and door filled with art or graffiti? I could never decide.

Here’s an odd sight. It’s not every day that you see a man taking his pet tortoise for a walk. Where did we see him? In downtown Savannah, Georgia, of course, a city that celebrates its eccentrics and its quirkiness. Maybe that’s why we enjoy the city so much.

I’ll end my post with this image which never seemed to fit any of our challenges. I spotted Muhammed Ali’s boxing gloves in the New York Historical Society. If you look closely, you can see his signature on the gloves. Given his larger-than-life personality, I was surprised that his signature wasn’t flashier and more dramatic. Are you?

  2. Oh my goodness Patti – this is a wonderful collection of oddities! The mannequins truly made me smile, especially in light of the delivery person’s reasoning! And the couple in the styrofoam balls is perfect! So happy to have given you a chance to post these!

  9. I love your odds and ends selections, Patti. Wow, his signature! Why it “wasn’t flashier and more dramatic”, makes you woder…
    these mannequins look like they were talking to each other. The capture of these styrofoam balls are fun! 🙂

    • Thanks, Brian! I thought his creativity was wonderful… I’ll never forget his sheepish smile when he told me why he arranged them like that. 😀😀😀. I told him I thought that was great.

  14. Hi Pattie’s! I think Ali’s signature was strong and steady – like he was – and you are right though – it was a bit 4th grace and not flashy – but maybe it is also hard to write on gloves ??
    Hmm
    And enjoyed your one of kind moments that were captured with the ball pit couple and artsy maneuqins – even the hand reaching for the Turkmen gives us that special moment vibe!

    • Hi, IJ. Yes, a piece of history. He was quite an athlete and self-promoter, and he was not afraid to say what he believed. I watched his funeral on TV and was amazed at how many people were his friends–from all walks of life.

    Excellent topic week, love it!
    Those mannequins are an interesting vignette, and that ball out looks like so much fun! When my daughter was little and restaurants with ball pits were all the rage for the little ones, one local spot had a dedicated grownups night. I have to say that sliding down their tunnel slide and landing in the balls was the most fun I had had in a long time. Thanks for reviving that fun memory.
