I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all the kinds of things you can’t see from the center.
Kurt Vonnegut
This week the Lens-Artists are heading in a new direction. We’re exploring “the edges.” What have you captured “On the Edge” of buildings, cliffs, rivers, beaches, tables, shelves, your finger, or your dinner plate? Feel free to use any kind of edge you can think of. You can also take the theme sideways…veering off into another meaning of “on the edge.” Think of “unconventional” or “edgy” or “avant garde.” To get you started, here are some examples.
A Salamander on the Edge
If you’re not living on the edge you’re taking up too much space.
Stephen Hunt
I looked up and checked twice. He’s NOT real. But this salamander makes a great decorative statement at the edge of this Italian home.
The Sir Walter Scott Memorial on the Edge
We live at the edge of the miraculous.
Henry Miller
Edinburgh has a unique, creative and independent spirit. Built on 7 extinct volanic hills, its geography is rugged and striking. One afternoon as we were exploring the city, I looked up at the Scott Monument. It loomed over the edge of the hill above the Princes Street Gardens.
Boston Lions on the Edge
Love asks us that we be a little braver than is comfortable, a little more generous, a little more flexible. It means living on the edge more than we care to.
Norman Mailer
The McKim building, which is the historic heart of the Boston Public Library, is one of my favorite places in the city. The main staircase is flanked by a pair of majestic lions, set on the edge of massive marble pediments.
Edgy Marlene in Florence
There are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember you are over the Edge of the Wild now, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go.
J. R. R. Tolkien
This last image is a street artist’s portrait of the avant-guard actress Marlene Dietrich, who enraptured audiences with her brillant performances on stage and in the movies. She was also admired for her courage in defying the Nazis and pushing the boundaries of convention throughout her life. You’ll see that she’s winking–a signature feature of all the murals created by the two women street artists, known as Lediesis.
I invite you to join us this week as we explore “On the Edge.” Show us your captures of people, places and things on “the edge.” Also consider another meaning of “on the edge”–as in “unconventional” or “edgy” or “avant garde.” But please….no daredevil photos! Stay safe and zoom in. And be sure to link to this site and use the Lens-Artists tag so we can easily find your post in the Reader.
Last week Tina’s challenge gave us a chance to share 10 of our favorite images. What a visual treat! You’ve shared great photos and great descriptions of these moments and their technical challenges. Simply terrific. And what’s up ahead? Next week, Ann-Christine will take the lead, so be sure to stop by her beautiful Leya site on Saturday at noon ET. She will be exploring the theme “On Display.” Until then, stay healthy, stay safe, and be inspired!

I saw Tina’s post before yours, Patti, so I already had a few ideas but I love your spin on this. That monument was a popular spot for suicides so they had to make it secure at the top, but it doesn’t detract from the look.
