Life is too short to live in black and white.

A very warm welcome to Egidio, who is hosting his first challenge as a member of the Lens Artists team! He’s chosen a wonderful challenge–an invitation to explore warm colors–how they appear in our world and their emotional significance.
I crave warm colors, warm weather, warm environments. They are expansive–inviting me to relax and think and dream.
I think we all need to be able to dream in all colors.
Victor J. Glover
I can think of no better place to start dreaming than this particular couch. Why? It belonged to Dr. Sigmund Freud who lived and worked in a turn-of-the-century apartment building in Vienna. Truthfully, on our visit several months ago, I was surprised that his home was filled with warm tones of red, gold, orange, and yellow. I was expecting more dispassionate shades of blue and green–given his clinical background!
Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.
Pablo Picasso
Here’s a beautiful example of warm colors in this portrait of Amalie Zuckerlandl by Gustav Klimpt, another Austrian. The warm colors hinted at her personality and prompted me to linger a while and admire her!
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Our son recently visited Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona, famous for its spectacular stone caves, filled with brillant colors. Here’s one of his photos from that trip. This site is definitely on my very long list of must-see places.
I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.
Alice Walker, The Color Purple
This beautiful bundle of color is one of nature’s gifts to us. The pink and lavender shades are invitations to the senses to linger and admire the beauty and simple elegance of this flower.
Color is a power which directly influences the soul.
― Wassily Kandinsky
This photo is deceptive. In fact, this reclining Buddah is gigantic (15 m/49 ft high and 46 m/150 ft long). The statue dominates the temple at Wat Pho in Bangkok. Here you can see the Buddah’s head near the ceiling.
The gilt finish on the statue filled the temple with a warming glow. The devotion of the Buddhist visitors and their awe had a powerful effect on me.
I truly enjoyed Egidio’s beautiful challenge, which was a terrific reminder of the power of colors and their impact on both on me and the people who view my photos. We hope you explore “warm colors” with us. Be sure to visit Egidio’s site to see his inspiring images and tips on how to use color in your photos. Please include the “lens-artists” tag so we can easily find your post. If you’re interested in joining the challenge and want to read more about it, here’s a link.
Looking back to last week, for Sofia’s Day and Night challenge, your images were beautiful and inspiring, as always! And what’s up for next week? Be sure to visit Slow Shutter Speed on Saturday at noon ET, when Anne will introduce a new challenge.
Until then, stay healthy, be curious, and be inspired!

Wonderful photos and mingling of images, quotes, and stories Patti! You’re so right about how color impacts our moods and energy. I especially enjoy warming golds and soothing greens. Antelope Canyon is on my to-do list too.

Hi Brad. Antelope has been on my list for a long while. When I told my son about it, he was excited. I hope you get to go sooner than later! And thanks for your kind words about the photos, quotes, stories. These places and colors had a wonderful impact on me. Have a good weekend, too!

What a beautiful and colorful post Patti! I loved all your rich warm colored images, especially the Budda. That must have been difficult to photograph.

Hi Anne. Many thanks for your kind words! Buddah was tough to capture. I have one image of the tiny doorway next to the Buddah but it wasn’t a great shot. 😦 😦 But I was somewhat happy with this one. Glad you enjoyed the photos! Have a good week/weekend, too.

Patti, this is a magnificent post! Thank you for sharing such stunning photos and stories. Freud’s couch, Klimpt’s painting, Antelope Canyon (I love that place), the flowers, and that enormous Buddha statue are impressive, to say the least. The quotes you paired each image with are also profound. Beautiful post and photos — all very enlightening and gorgeous.

Hi Teresa. He said it was a fascinating place. You can tour the upper and lower canyon. He did both. I’m not sure where he took this shot, but he said the place was stunning. Thanks for your thoughts on my photos, too. 🙂 🙂

It’s funny how I sometimes “kick” myself for forgetting about using a photo of a place until I see that someone else has used it! Alex has a great visual eye (he’s a visual effects artist) so I always learn a lot from him. Thanks so much for your thoughts, Ritva. 🙂

Excellent post, Patti. I am surprised to know about Freud’s colour scheme, I’d think him more of a cooler colours person, so interesting! I like that you covered all warm colours and your post reads as one thought. And te more I see Antelope Canyon the more I want to experience it 🙂

Hi Sofia. Me, too! About Freud and Antelope Canyon. I’ve wanted to go there for about 6 years. Funny….I told Alex about it and he went last month. 🙂 He said it was an amazing experience. I hope you get to go. Let me when you do. 🙂

Hi Tina. Thanks! The buddha was so hard to capture, given its size! But I’m glad I got that shot at least. It is a remarkable site. Klimpt is great. I love his work. Have a good week with plenty of sunshine.

Patti, He took such a great a shot in Antelope Canyon. Did he do just a regular tour or the one that they have for photographers? The photographers get to go in when the light is really unique. You and Rich have to get there. It really is a special environment. Take care. Roseanne

A wonderful and unique look at warm images Patti. I agree, not what I would expect of Freud. The Buddha is fantastic. I can only imagine those viewing it in its entirety. Sounds wonderful. Yes, Antelope Canyon for your “one of these days”.
